Real de Catorce is a village of perhaps 1,500 permanent residents. Most of the time you will not have trouble finding a room if you call well in advance, but several times during the year, the little village swells to as many as 30,000 or more as pilgrams make their way to worship at the church.

Port towns such as Ensenada, La Paz, Mazatlán and Veracruz are excellent places to watch Carnaval festivities. Dia de San Francisco de Assisi Day - Celebrated in Real de Catorce. Up to 30,000 pilgrims arrive in Real from all over Mexico, many walking up to 300 miles to visit the church and pray to Saint Francis Assisi for cures and good health. The pilgrims start arriving in September and some stay until October 15. You can expect up to 5 hour delays to arrive in Real through the tunnel. Rooms will have to be booked months in advance and food service will be slow. The streets will be filled with a virtual sea of people. Many of the local residents secure their homes and leave Real during this period. |
