An introduction or a re-introduction?

I started at the Austin Sun as the guy in the camera room, enlarging and reducing the ads and photos for the art department to use in the layout. When they had finished their magic and returned the pages back to the camera room, I shot the line negatives and stripped the halftoned photos into place. And, then the next morning I would accompany either Hubig or another member of the staff to the printer where we would sit around for several hours while the edition was printed. By the time we had returned to the Sun offices, I would have been “at work” for some 72 hours. Grueling! But, I had the Texas Chili Parlour down the street where I could get coffee to steed me through.

At the same time I was working at the Sun, I was also working at Wallace Engraving, where I performed the same camera work for Texas Monthly, Ace Reid Cartoons and even a few editions of Texas Highway, as well as a bevy of other publications.

When Hubig and Brady left, I was transformed into the art director and held the position until the Sun closed its doors. A sad day, indeed!

Since then, I have gone back to my roots as a “Creataholic.” I opened a screenprinting shop in Austin, where we produced serigraphs, screenprinted graphic and textile items.

Today, I am a still the creative workaholic in that I have 130 websites devoted mainly to the screenprinting industry as well as my artistic endeavors. I own the Screenprint Store in Austin, where we sell screenprinting equipment and supplies online, as well as our own line of ink that my business partner and I manufacturer in Mexico City.

I write technical articles for the screenprinting industry, well over 1,000 to date, and I have published 32 books on screenprinting. I conduct workshops each month at the School of Screenprinting in Austin, New Jersey and in Mexico City.

Barbara, my life partner and I currently split our time between our residences along the banks of the Colorado River some 20 miles outside of Austin and at our second home in Cuernavaca, Mexico, which is about an hour south of Mexico City.

Barbara and I were attending an event in Los Angeles some time ago and on a whim, I called up Deb Stall (now Deborah Stall-Nelson) who was the Director of Advertising at the old Austin Sun. She was living in Santa Barbara, so Barbara and I drove up and spent a lovely afternoon reminiscing about the old Austin Sun days. At the end of the day, we thought surely there must be others who would like to reunite and thus this website was created. We, Deb and I, hope that you enjoy the site and all that it will become.
