To cash in a large amount of small change in Cuernavaca:
1. Banks (Bancos): Start with a major bank branch for the most straightforward approach to converting a large amount into bills. Banks in Mexico are required by law to exchange coins for bills, even for non-customers.
• Pre-sorting your coins by denomination (1, 2, 5, 10 pesos) will make any exchange much faster and easier
• Go to a Banamex, BBVA, or Santander branch office during less busy times, maybe mid-morning on a weekday.
• Patience: Be prepared for some waiting, as counting a large volume of coins takes time.
• Deposit or Exchange: You can deposit the coins directly into your account or ask the teller to exchange them for larger bills (billetes).
2. Supermarkets/Big Stores: Use your coins for a large purchase at stores like Walmart, Chedraui, or local markets (Mercados). They can handle large amounts of change.
3. Busy Markets: Vendors in central markets (like the Mercado Adolfo López Mateos) are used to handling lots of small coins and can often break them down for you when buying goods.
4. Transport: Bus drivers and taxi drivers often have smaller bills and can help you break down change, but don’t rely on them for all your change at once.
