Incorrect Information Online is a global epidemic. Polling research has shown that a vast majority (86%) of individuals have been exposed to it. The Internet is overran with articles that poorly written to the point that most resources claim that a high percent are incorrect. Most people believe the government and tech firms should take steps to restrict false information online? But, why should the government or private business control what is the individual’s fault.<\/h3>\n

It would be difficult to calculate an exact, verified percentage of all Internet articles that contain incorrect information. Yes, we have computer software that can scan the Internet and tell us the number of postings but when asked what percentage is incorrect, the software falls apart. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a machine language that lacks the ability to differentiate between what is true and what is not. AI uses a form of Groupthink, by scanning billions of sites for information and arriving at a consensus of what is claimed online.<\/p>\n

A commonly-used AI checker used by newspapers and magazines, has a feature labeled “Fact Checker” that will search the Internet comparing the information in the article with others on the Internet using Groupthink. When it find something that disagrees with a detail in the article, it will highlight it and provide a suggested rewrite based on the findings. The software cannot tell the difference between what the author claims and what it found on the Internet. When the author is faced with a dozen other articles that make the claim that his statement is false, the author may consider that they are wrong, even if they are correct.<\/p>\n

Studies and surveys indicate that misinformation is quickly becoming widespread. Three-Quarters (78%) are concerned about the results of incorrect information (53%) and feel more concerned compared to one year ago,<\/p>\n

General Web Accuracy:<\/strong> Some estimates suggest that as much as 80% of information on the Internet could be classified as “rubbish”\u2014a mix of low-quality, biased, or false content, mostly stemming from user-generated content and social media.<\/p>\n

Medical\/Specific Information:<\/strong> In a study on specific medical advice (low back pain), only 43.3% of recommendations on websites were found to be accurate, with 36.2% being inaccurate.<\/p>\n

AI-Generated Content:<\/strong> Recent audits found that AI-powered search engines and tools provide incorrect information or cite unreliable sources 37% to 67% of the time, with some newer models showing even higher inaccuracy rates in specific tests.<\/p>\n

Social Media & News:<\/strong> Around 42.8% of people who share news on social media admitted to sharing content that was inaccurate or false. Furthermore, 67% of users report encountering false or misleading information on Facebook regularly.<\/p>\n

Bot Activity:<\/strong> Estimates show that bots, which often spread misinformation, account for 20% to 30% of all social media activity.<\/p>\n

Key Findings on Misinformation<\/h3>\n

“Confidently Wrong” AI:<\/strong> A March 2025 study found that AI search engines are “confidently wrong” over 60% of the time when citing news.<\/p>\n

Concentrated Misinformation:<\/strong> A 2024 study found that a very small percentage of users (0.25% of X users) are responsible for 73% to 78% of all low-credibility or misinformation.<\/p>\n

User Recognition:<\/strong> A 2019 survey found that 86% of online global citizens have been exposed to incorrect information, and 86% of them have believed it was real at least once.<\/p>\n

The image below is from an AI created video that is making the rounds on a global basis and was sent to a number of individuals here in Cuernavaca. I now this because they then sent it to me. Most individuals who commented believed that the woman was unusually large and one asked, how is this possible. None seemingly considered that it might be AI. The woman would need to be approximately 8 feet tall if she were real. No one questioned the irregularities in the image, such as the different shadow angle points, the strange elongated white station wagon, and the improbably short traffic cone. These are all key indicators of an AI created image.<\/p>\n
