Temporary residents can spend a year traveling abroad as long as the residence card remains valid and the resident returns using the residency and not as a Tourist before the expiration date.<\/p>\n
Permanent residents may live abroad for years and maintain their status. However, permanent residents may need to return using their residency and not as a Tourist to Mexico to update their information when moving or changing work places.<\/p>\n
There are details that can have huge repercussions if not followed.<\/p>\n
1. Both temporary and permanent residents must present their residency card upon return. If a resident enters Mexico as a tourist, they risk losing their residency altogether.<\/p>\n
2. Temporary residents must return to Mexico to renew or update their residency status.<\/p>\n
3. If the Temporary Residency card expires while the resident is abroad, the resident may lose their status and need to reapply for residency.<\/p>\n
4. Both temporary and permanent residents are required to report certain changes, including address, marital status, nationality, or employment. These changes must be made in person at an immigration office in Mexico.<\/p>\n
5. For individuals who plan to apply for Mexican Citizenship, they must prove that they were physically in Mexico for at least 18 months during the two years before the application can be made. The immigration office needs prove such as passport stamps, airline boarding passes, stamped copies of residency cards showing entries and exits. These records of travel history can make the citizenship process easier.<\/p>\n
There are some pilot programs in place that can offer remote updates under rare exceptions. These are not widely available and change without notice, thus they remain unreliable at the moment.<\/p>\n
Most countries have ceased stamping physical passport and use digital travel history portals. In most entry points you may not be able to request physical stamps from border agents.<\/p>\n
