BBVA Downsizing Again

BBVA is closing many of its branch offices in Morelos, such as the Plaza Laurel location in Cuernavaca, which closed as of January 29, 2026. The bank took this action after removing their ATMs throughout the city where customers enjoyed digital banking rather than having to go the bank. Now BBVA is saying that the closing of the branches as a shift towards digital banking rather than physical, in-person service. The closures have led to a significant increase in customer traffic at remaining locations, that drives up the banks cost to provide the services to their customer seeking in-person service.

Key Reasons and Context:

Shift to Digital: BBVA encourages customers to use mobile apps and online banking, which reduces the need for physical branches.
Operational Optimization: The bank is optimizing its online network rather than in-person services nationwide.
National Strategy: These closures are part of a broader national strategy by BBVA Mexico to change its service model.
Customer Impact: The reduction of branches has caused frustration among users in areas like Cuernavaca, resulting in longer lines and congestion at remaining locations.

Customers are advised to use ATMs, digital apps, or alternative branches for their BBVA banking needs.
