Cuernavaca Breaks 2023 Record for World’s Longest Taco Acorazado

In a vibrant display of community spirit, Cuernavaca has once again dazzled the world by breaking its own record with a magnificent Taco Acorazado (armored taco) measuring an astonishing 78.53 meters in length. This remarkable feat, achieved with the enthusiastic participation of thousands of citizens and dedicated volunteers, surpasses the previous record of 70.4 meters set in 2023, also in Cuernavaca.

The success of this culinary endeavor is a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including private enterprises, civil society, and the Municipal Government, all united in the mission to celebrate and preserve the rich identity and culinary heritage of both Cuernavaca and the broader Morelos region.

On the day of the record-breaking event, a joyful atmosphere enveloped the city as locals gathered to witness the creation of the world’s largest taco. Initially, organizers aimed for a length of 75 meters, but thanks to the unwavering support and hard work the final creation exceeded expectations, reaching 78 meters and 53 centimeters without any fissures in the tortilla.

The record was officially certified by notary public No. 2, Hugo Salgado Castañeda, who closely monitored the preparation process, ensuring the authenticity of this historic moment for Cuernavaca and its citizens.

The Organizing Committee expressed heartfelt gratitude for the teamwork and coordination displayed for the second consecutive year. Their efforts have not only organized a successful event but have also attracted attention from local, national, and international tourism, highlighting the community’s resilience and strength.

The impressive preparation of the largest armored taco required approximately 35 kilograms of dough donated by the Council of the Mass and Tortilla in Morelos. In a generous display of community spirit, a total of 150 kilograms were donated, ensuring that all participants had a chance to enjoy this special culinary creation, with assistance from the Apolo company.

As the long, delicate tortilla was expertly transferred hand-to-hand along planks from the esplanade of the historic Palacio de Cortés to the intersection of Calle Prolongación de Hidalgo and Gutemberg Street, excitement surged through the crowd. Even after reaching 75 meters without breaking, dedicated participants continued to add layers of flavorful stews, traditional Morelos rice, and delectable fillings, all prepared by local chefs and donated for the delight of attendees.

The atmosphere was further enriched by the artistic performances of the Xochiquetzalli Ballet from the Benning Music Academy and the lively participation of chinelos dancers, who brought joy and energy to the festivities, captivating both children and adults alike. This epic creation of the largest armored taco not only exemplified culinary artistry but also strengthened community bonds, making it a truly unforgettable celebration in the heart of Cuernavaca.

Note: there are different records for “biggest,” “longest,” and “heaviest,” and they are often measured differently, according to Guinness World Records. For example:

Longest taco with a specific filling: A 102-meter (335 ft) long carnitas taco was made in Querétaro, Mexico, on November 12, 2019. This record was achieved by the Board of Querétaro’s Kitchen. However, this record was broken on September 18, 2024 when a 110-meter (360.89 ft) long taco was made in Berriozábal, Chiapas, Mexico, by the state and tourism groups. It was filled with cochito (a typical Chiapas pork dish) and distributed to the public.

Largest flour taco: A 10.95-meter (35.9 ft) long flour taco was made in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, on March 8, 2003. It weighed 750 kg (1,654 lb) and was made with grilled steak, dough, onion, and coriander.
