Cuernavaca Breaks its Record for the Longest Taco Acorazado

According to Guinness World Records and the city’s website at cuernavaca.gob.mx, Cuernavaca has surpassed their previous records for the World Record for the longest taco acorazado (armored taco), with a single long tortilla that was unbroken.

What is a Taco Acorazado

A taco acorazado, or “armored taco,” is a large, hearty dish from Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, that features a thick corn tortilla folded around a filling of red rice and a choice of guisados (stews), such as milanesa, chile relleno, or mole. The name refers to its “armored” structure, which is reinforced with rice and a substantial filling to make it filling and prevent it from becoming soggy and unbroken during dining.

What Makes a Taco Acorazado Special

Base: A large, thick corn tortilla that can hold a generous amount of fillings.

Rice: A layer of red rice is a key component, adding flavor and stability.

Filling: It is filled with one or more guisados (stews), such as milanesa (breaded meat), chile relleno, potato with chorizo, or mole.

Accompaniments: It is often served with classic sides like nopales (cactus pads), potatoes, or various salsas.

Origin: It originated in Cuernavaca, Morelos, during the Mexican Revolution as a practical meal for workers that was both portable and substantial.

Cuernavaca now continues to hold the world record for the longest taco acorazado at 80 meters (262.46 feet). This breaks the previous record 75 meters (246.06 feet) set in 2023, and the 78.53 meters (257.64 feet) that was also set by Cuernavaca in January 2024, according to an article in the city’s official website cuernavaca.gob.mx. The record-breaking event involved collaboration between local restaurants, gastronomy schools, and the community.

  • 2023 Record: Cuernavaca set the record for the longest taco acorazado at 75 meters (246.06 feet). The effort to create this taco involved a single, long tortilla that could not break, and a variety of fillings like rice, beans, and different stews. Hundreds of families, restaurants, and gastronomy students worked together to create the record-breaking taco.
  • 2024 Record: Cuernavaca later broke its own record in January 2024 with a taco that was 78.53 meters (257.64 feet) long. Again with a single tortilla.
  • 2025 Record: On February 23, 2025, Cuernavaca again broke its record of a single tortilla that was 80 meters (262.46 feet) long.
