This book, “Technique of the Silk Screen Process“, 3rd Edition, was part of the “Technical Problems of the Artist” series, produced by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1937. The author is Anthony E. Velonis, the leader of the Federal Art Project at WPA. Velonis co-founded the Creative Printmakers Group in 1939 and the National Serigraphy Society in 1940 and co-founded the Ceraglass Company in 1940. Velonis also created the word “Serigraphy” to refer to the use of the screenprinting process as used by artists to create fine art prints.
This 3rd Edition of the “Technique of the Silk Screen Process” is a faithful reproduction of the original, printed using the mimeograph process and distributed throughout the USA. While millions of copies were printed, only four copies of the original book are known to exist today.
While there have been many innovations in the screenprinting process, this book is a historical reference for researchers and others interested in learning more about screenprinting production in 1937. The original text is preserved. For example, the text refers to “paint” instead of ink, as specific inks were yet to be formulated.
In addition to the original book, there is a bonus chapter with a biography of the author, Anthony E. Velonis.
